Factory Nights by Day @ Wallsend Festival, 5 July 2008

<<Further info

rednile presented a day of artists-in-residence at Mecca Bingo as part of the Wallsend Festival. Five North East artists were located throughout the former 1930’s cinema and spent the day making work inspired by the history of the building, the people that use it and their stories. The bingo games continued throughout the day as the artists moved around the building working in photography, drawing, film, sound and sculpture. This allowed customers and the public to engage with artists to find out what inspires them and how they create their artwork.

Factory Nights by Day was funded by North Tyneside Council and kindly supported by Mecca Bingo, Wallsend.

Please see below for details on the chosen artists:

ADINDA VAN'T KLOOSTER

Adinda was inspired on the rednile Mecca Bingo Factory Night when she discovered through chatting to the elderly women, how important the bingo was to their sense of independence. Adinda will explore the gap between herself and these women who are two generations ahead of her by providing a platform of self-expression. On the festival day Adinda will invite women to talk to her about their personal stories, which she will record and later mix and sample into a short sound performance. Adinda will be situated throughout the building whilst she conducts the interviews.

She works with a wide range of media such as video and sound installation, animation, sculpture, and computer generated performance. She explores the areas where art & science, and art & music/sound overlap.

She is currently involved in doctoral research at Sunderland University where she is doing practice based PhD in responsive audiovisual installations.

BRIGHID MULLEY

Brighid will use the Festival day to do research for a short film. The building will be used as a location for a scene in her film which will reference movies from the 1930’s. Brighid will make drawings for a story-board, take digital video footage and frame shots using an old fashioned 16mm film camera. Brighid would like to discuss the project with the bingo hall users and even invite people to be part of the film by standing in positions while she plans her shots. Brighid will be working throughout the building. She graduated with a BA in Fine Art from the University of Northumbria in 2007. Her works in video, film and installation explore the relationship of the individual to the environment and have been exhibited and screened both in the UK and internationally, most recently in Berlin in March 2008.

SARAH STAMP

On visiting the Mecca Bingo, Sarah noticed many interesting details of the building and its architecture that are perhaps often overlooked during an everyday Bingo session. Sarah would like to invite anyone interested to join her in taking photographs and possibly reveal any features they have noticed. Photographs taken by both Sarah and visitors will be compiled into an album and kept in the bingo to act as a prompt toward new ways of experiencing the building. Sarah will be situated throughout the building during the festival day. A graduate in Fine Art from the University of Sunderland in 2007, she is a founding member of BaseNorth artists group and has just returned from a research visit to Berlin. Sarah received a free studio space from rednile during their New City Programme.

MICHAEL BRANTHWAITE of REDNILE

Michael will be making a film based on the random numbers called in bingo and will be inviting visitors to read out their favourite or lucky bingo number. This will then be made into a projection showing each of the bingo numbers in a random order. This piece will be a visual documentation of the clientele of the bingo in Wallsend in 2008 and a reflection on superstition and luck that is used in the game. Michael will be situated in the foyer of the building

SUZANNE HUTTON and JANINE GOLDSWORTHY of REDNILE

Suzanne and Janine will be collaborating to make an installation in the bingo hall using billboard posters from past adverting campaigns for the Mecca Bingo that have been discarded in the former cinema projection rooms. This will be made into a sculpture inspired by the former cinema hall and its remaining architectural features. Attendees of the bingo session will be invited to contribute to the sculpture by making their own piece. Suzanne and Janine will be on the main stage.

BACKGROUND of FACTORY NIGHTS:

Factory Nights is an extremely successful programme of creative working sessions that was piloted in North Tyneside and Sunderland in 2008. The sessions are a unique opportunity for all types of creative people to come together, many who normally work at home or in isolation and provide a fuel to feed the creative fire, whilst forging relationships with businesses and utilizing their interesting spaces.

Factory Nights also solves the frustration of lack of studio space available, gives opportunities for artists to make work and also provides a channel for creative people to become more visible. This, as proved by Factory Nights by Day, increases the opportunities for more events, building a stronger cultural community that the local authority are aware of and can work with. Each venue chosen to house a Factory Night, have the enthusiasm for future creative collaboration within their spaces and want to work with artists.
