Sculpture Garden in St Bede’s School

The Creative Partnership Sculpture Garden project at St Bedes RC School, Durham involved rednile presenting an initial approach of how to engage their pupils in creative activity that would result in one of a number of unused outdoor spaces in the school grounds being redesigned.

rednile were aware of the importance of guided learning and the project has been shaped by the interests of the students and the school. Our initial proposal involved the exploration of folk art and outsider art looking at artists such as Nek Chand and Niki De Saint Phalle to create a unique outside space.  The students  developed this into Wanderland, a sculpture garden that will be situated in a safe area that the school can use as an outside classroom.

The students were inspired by fantastical landscapes such as Alice in Wonderland and Charlie and the chocolate factory and have created 3D models and an overall design that represents this.  rednile worked closely with Bespoke Concrete company to develop methods of fabricating the fantastical sculptures using highly skilled craftspeople and high quality concrete finishes. The project has involved the students, teachers, parents and the school’s Garden Club in order that the sculpture garden is embedded into the school and that it can continue to grow and develop each year as other funding is identified.
