Steeling Skies Phase 1 was an art and community engagement project designed to feed into a design strategy for the Shiregreen estate, Sheffield. The project ran from June – October 2009.

The Steeling Skies project involved rednile working dynamically with the community in creative sessions and events that explored the Shiregreen estate. During this time rednile gathered information and ideas that fed into the creative direction and design of major public realm improvements for the estate. rednile also created temporary artwork and interventions within the Shiregreen estate that where inspired by the information gathered during sessions and their own research into Shiregreen. Steeling Skies succeeded in raising the profile of Shiregreen with an ethos and approach of ‘looking upwards and looking again at your environment to vision new spaces and look forward.’

The rednile artists worked with residents from the local community using creative activities to highlight issues raised, discuss future ideas and capture any ideas for the design of the new street scheme. All works made by residents where showcased at the Summer Community Festival on Friday 21st August at Hartley Brook Primary school.
The Steeling Skies programme ended with a celebration session for the community in September including three unique temporary artworks that related to the historical context of Shiregreens traditional lamppost. Each artwork was in place for one day and provoked a range of responses as well as focusing debate on how to integrate the much loved lampposts into the future design scheme. The first of these one day visual art events included a local scout group building a 3 meter high tower so that the scouts could get a new and exciting view of the estate!

Another important element to the project was the commissioning of Sheffield based urban artist Chris Butcher. He spray painted the lampposts freehand with his interpretations of photographs taken during photography workshops with local residents led by rednile. These paintings brought a new focus to the lampposts and also generated ideas of how the lampposts could be incorporated into the green areas in Phase 2 developments.
